Frame Drum Ensemble Course with Murat Coskun

A Journey to the World of Frame Drum Music!

An ensemble workshop for frame drums, open to voices, singing, and/or melody instruments

Start: Thursday, 02.04.2026, 18.00h - arrival, warm up, session
End: Sunday, 05.04.2026, 17.30h
(19h Workshop presentation, about 45-60 min)

The frame drum is arguably one of the most versatile percussion instruments. Sound, groove, and melody form a unity.

In this three-day workshop, I want to bring the versatility of frame drums to life and explore “sound, groove, and melody.” The workshop consists of both instrumental lessons and ensemble work. Beatriz Picas (cello, vocals), Yaschar, and Malika Coşkun will accompany me as co-instructors.

A Journey to the World of Frame Drum Music!

Location: E-Werk, Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany)
Lecturers: Murat Coskun (course instructor), co-teachers: Beatriz Picas (cello, voice), Yaschar Coskun (percussion), Malika Coskun (percussion)
Course fee: 250€/ 225€ (discounted)
Instrument: Frame Drums (also other percussion instruments, voice and/ or melodic instruments are welcome - Please request in advance!)

How is the workshop structured?

Online preparation phase in March 2026:

An online meeting will take place in March to present the teaching material. This will give you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the material in advance and clarify any questions you may have before the course. This will allow us to use the face-to-face event in Freiburg much more effectively.
This meeting will take place via Zoom and will be recorded by me. The recording of the meeting will then be made available to all participants.
Participation in this preparatory meeting is optional and not mandatory, but I recommend reviewing the material in advance and preparing yourself.

Workshop phase (April 2–5, 2026):

The main topics are:

1. Expanding (sound) spatial playing through finger and hand techniques

2. Rhythm training, including “odd meters” (5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 11/16) and rhythmic compositions

3. Ensemble playing
This involves playing music together with melodies and songs. Topics include
- Percussion arrangements
- Percussion accompaniments (whether “simple” or varied accompaniments)
- Phrasing and structuring a piece
- Polyphonic percussion accompaniment
- Using your own voice while drumming
Choreographic ideas for performance and improvisational ideas.

The goal of our course is a final presentation of our joint musical work on April 5, 2026. Here we will present the “workshop results” to each other. All participants will be integrated, i.e., spectators can participate just as much as the performing ensembles.

Course Language: English
Level: Intermediate = Good prior knowledge in playing frame drums
